Over the course of last year, we have been facing quite a few persistent and recurring quality issues with the current ChinaList. Unfortunately, our offers for support have been ignored or rejected. Therefore, we regrettably had to decide to no longer offer ChinaList as the default list for Chinese and Taiwanese Adblock Plus users.
Starting March 21st, 2014 we will offer the new EasyList China as the new default list. For now it is based on ChinaList but new contributors are working on improving the quality of the filters, and will continue to do so.
We do genuinely want to thank you for offering so much of your time over the last years to help blocking out annoying ads in China and we'd love to welcome you back as a contributor to the new list at any time.
Kind regards, Till
As the project owner of ChinaList, I was very shocked and furious anger that Adblock Plus redirect EasyList + ChinaList combinenation list to the EasyList + EasyList China without our authorization.
W.T zhang, the other project owner, has e-mailed to you for this with strong dissatisfaction, but nothing was solved. I seriously protest here. if the problem cannot be resolved within 24 hours after you receive this e-mail, we will take all the measures to protect our own rights including but not limited to legal ways.
From what I understand, you are already communicating with Till on that matter. Till has more context information here as I wasn't following the development concerning ChinaList closely. Still, I feel that I owe you a reply.
I can fully understand that you are upset now. I always considered ChinaList to be one of the not too many regional filter lists that managed to build up a solid community and stable contributions. I've seen just how much work went into it.
Yet I don't speak Chinese and I never communicated with our Chinese users. When we started reaching out to Chinese users the feedback was very consistent: Adblock Plus doesn't work well. At least one Chinese browser vendor integrated Adblock Plus but went with own filter lists - because the default ones simply "don't work well." As you certainly understand this isn't a situation that we are happy with.
There have been several attempts from our side to improve things within ChinaList. I don't really know what went wrong there but fact is that these attempts failed. Please be assured that forking ChinaList isn't a decision that was taken lightly - but at that point it was the only way to improve the situation.
Migrating existing users away from ChinaList is a controversial step but it is a necessary decision in that context as we need to ensure a good experience for our Chinese users. We installed ChinaList by default for these users but if it is no longer the best choice then we have to correct this.
Please be assured that I value your contributions and would be happy to see you continue contributing to Adblock Plus.
